The haste with which politicians, institutions and administrations rush to celebrate centenaries of the birth or death of an author is striking. Or of the first edition of a work. Fine, but what changes with respect to the day before or the day after? How does it affect citizens, culture and their enjoyment of it? Nothing. And it is also surprising how little impact there is when an author's work, eighty years after his death, enters the public domain. Perhaps a few reviews in the media, a minute of filler on the news in the first days of January... but that does change things.
The move into the public domain does not mean that the rights "belong to no one"; on the contrary, they now belong to everyone. That means treating the work with respect and affection, which is what we have tried to do. And it also means that the obligation to disseminate them and ensure their projection is incumbent on all of us, and this includes the administrations and public bodies. We want to draw attention to this as well.
When works enter the public domain, they can from that moment on be performed, printed and edited, digitised and shared, without having to ask anyone's permission and without generating any income from economic rights. This should be the great celebration of culture. Perhaps one day it will be understood in this way.
And that is the intention of Mil Coeditores, to celebrate this happening. We are a collective that was born under the protection of the networks, as is happening now. Illustrators, designers, photographers and artists who want to celebrate by doing our bit in the dissemination of these contents, and do it as we know best: interpreting them graphically.
